Plastic liners and cotton mitts are used to insulate the hands or feet for ten minutes. The paraffin easily slides off and a hand or foot massage follows. The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Swedish massage was developed in the 1700's by a Swedish doctor named Per Henrik Ling. The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. Swedish massage techniques include long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage, and shaking motions.
Pregnancy massage has been found to reduce stress, decrease swelling in the arms and legs, relieving aches and pains in muscles and joints. It's a popular complementary therapy for back pain, when choices for pain relief, such as medication, are often limited. Not only can massage be physically beneficial, but the human touch can be comforting and provide emotional support during pregnancy. Massage has been found to reduce anxiety and depression. The mother's body must be properly positioned and supported during the massage, using pillows and padding ensuring comfort and safety for the mother and baby. Deep tissue and excessive stretching, should not be used.
During this specialty massage smooth, heated stones, are placed on the body and also used as an extension of the therapists hands. The heat can be both very relaxing and help warm up tight muscles so the therapist can work deeper more quickly. However it is also suited for people who have muscle tension but prefer a lighter massage. The heat relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist to work the muscles without using deep pressure. The warmth of the hot stones improves circulation and calms the nervous system.
There are reflex points (on the hands, feet and ears) that relate to specific organs and glands in the body. Stimulating those points with finger pressure promotes health in those organs and glands via the body's energetic pathways. Reflexology works as the pressure techniques applied to the feet or hands interact as a part of the body's nervous system creating: relaxation, improved circulation, exercise of the nervous system and the benefits of touch. You will receive a foot salt glow exfoliation then your feet will be wrapped in steam towels before the reflexology treatment begins.
